01 A closer look at Kari Vaga wood
Kari Vaga wood (Albizia odoratissima), also known as Black Siris or Kala Siris, is a hardwood used for furniture, cabinets, boards and panels. Locally, it is known as Kari Vaga or Kunni Vaga.
Its brown heartwood and coarse texture give it a different character from Indian rosewood. Select the timber by species, dimensions, condition and intended use.

02 Read the grain. See the character.
Natural colour and figure vary from piece to piece. Inspect the actual material before ordering.
Heartwood
Brown to dark-brown heartwood may show darker streaks. Assess colour using photographs of the actual stock.
Sapwood
Sapwood is white to yellowish white. The distinction from heartwood may be weak, so do not rely on colour alone for identification.
Grain & figure
Texture is coarse, with grain reported as straight or interlocked. Check grain direction when planning machining and finishing.
Kari Vaga and Indian rosewood are different timbers. Albizia odoratissima is not Dalbergia latifolia. Confirm the botanical name when selecting stock.
